The national planning policy framework (nppf) defines Instrumentation operated in the national interest as: '... meteorological and climate monitoring installations, satellite and radio communication, defence and national security sites and magnetic calibration facilities operated by or on behalf of the Government, delegated authorities or for defence purposes.'
